1881 British Census

The British Census for 1881 contains information pertaining to all people present in England, Scotland and Wales in April 1881. An index is available, but does not work too well, and it can be difficult to find your relative.

I have created my own index for the M'Meanmain family variants, shown below. It is sorted by Surname, birth year, then forename. I hope you find this helpful. (Please note this is NOT a copy of the published index, it has been created from scratch).

Some (useless) facts:

  • There are 79 variations of the basic name in the census.
  • 893 individuals are identified
  • The average age is 23.
  • The oldest person is 90.
  • There are 344 children (under the age of 14).
  • There are 175 households.
  • The average household has 5.1 people.
  • The most common names for females are Mary (91), Catherine (38), Margaret (34), Elizabeth (26), Agnes (20) & Sarah (20).
  • The most common names for males are John (93), James (66), William (43), Patrick (28), Thomas (28), & Edward (19).
  • The families are distributed over 25 counties + the Navy

I have split the index into several separate files in order to ensure they load moderately quickly. The table below acts as an index to the index!
